About
My project started at a medical staffing and recruitment company where I observed that candidates with foreign names was harder to bring about then candidate with Swedish names. In my research project I therefore want to understand the presumptions and attitudes that are to be found in the Swedish health system and I do this by using a mixed method design where the goal is to get a broad understanding of the field. I have started conceptualizing a phenomenon that I call ‘Cultural Authorization’ that so far has been found mediated in professional health journalistic texts about immigrant doctors. I have also conducted a survey among medical doctors about their experiences of discrimination. Preliminary results from this study show that an intersectional approach (gender and immigrant background) is needed to understand discriminatory experiences among these medical doctors. My last data collection will be interviews with medical doctors how has immigrated to Sweden and now work within the health system. The research will be published in separate articles and concluded in a dissertation in 2014.
